Formal UMC Division in 2024?
I suspect the delay (due to COVID) Quadrennial General Conference of the UMC to 2024 will yield a formal division into a progressive community (Blue States) and a traditional-faith (Red States) community, called "Global Methodist Church". The 2019 specially called conference failed to resolve the wide chasm over same-sex marriage and ordination of those in active homosexual relationships. It feels like two denominations pretended to be one unified institution for these past 40 years.
In 2022, all UMC Jurisdictional Conferences elected liberal Bishops (who only assign liberal pastors to churches). UMC congregations have until 12/31/2023 to ESCAPE from the UMC with their property, but they must ACT SOON because the legal process for each congregation will take months to resolve during 2023. Contact United Methodist Action or Good News Magazine for assistance in planning and speakers who can explain the temporary options for your congregation.
Bay Area Harsh Critic
On 6/ 18/2003 in a speech in Ohio to the far-left Methodist Federation for Social Action, the progressive Bishop Melvin Talbert (from Northern California) applied these appalling labels to all the UMC reform and renewal movements.

More than 30 years ago, FFE cast a vision to equip pastors during their seminary education for the role of evangelism in their daily ministry
- [$] A Foundation for Theological Education - Funds ThD Wesleyan candidates and Seminary deans
- In 1977, AFTF founders Dr. Albert C. Outler, renowned scholar and late professor at Southern Methodist University, with the late Dr. Edmund W. Robb, Jr. strongly believed that a greater emphasis on the evangelical Wesleyan tradition in our official seminaries would bring greater spiritual vitality to the entire denomination.

- [$] Transforming Congregations - Be transformed by the renewing of your mind - Hosted by Good News
- Equipping the UMC to model and minister God’s amazingly good design for sanctified and life-giving sexuality, as revealed in Scripture: through leadership teams, preaching & teaching, development of conferences & retreats, recommendation of solid programs, cultivating groups that go deeper; opening heart-level discussion that most Christians avoid, and confidential support for sexually-struggling pastors and Christian leaders.
- [$] United Methodist Action is a committee of The Institute of Religion and Democracy (Mark Tooley, Director)
- UM Action defends biblical faithfulness and a disciple-making focus as sought by John Wesley, and challenge those who would divert our church from that mission. We seek to reform our institutional approach to social and political issues to be more restrained, nuanced, non-partisan, and thoughtfully grounded in biblical and historic Christian teachings, in the spirit of the "On Humility, Politics, and Christian Unity" resolution. That resolution was written by UM Action’s director, John Lomperis, and overwhelmingly adopted by the 2008 General Conference.
Affiliated groups worth knowing about
- CLOSED- Ed Robb Evang. Assoc. (retired 2002 after 35 years and since died). Ed wrote significant books on UMC.
- CLOSED- Evangelical Renewal Fellowship - Moderate California UMC Pastors group - Many conservative founding pastors left the UMC during 1999-2001 in response to purging machinations by the progressive Cal-Nevada conference.
- Four Corners Native American Ministry - Navajo Nation indigenous pastors - Rev. Paul West encouraged Wesleyan principles when starting this cooperative of independent congregations. I have not kept up with them.
- CLOSED- Holy Spirit Conference (was once held annually, I attended in 1999). I have not kept up with them.
- Redwood Christian Park - A beautiful Conference Grounds in Boulder Creek near Santa Cruz once strongly linked to the Asbury College Revival of the 1970's. As far as I know, no Methodist linkage since 2000.
